L’écureuil gris (Sciurus carolinensis) ou plus rarement écureuil gris de Caroline, est un mammifère rongeur arboricole, commun dans l’Est de l’Amérique du Nord. Généralement gris, il peut aussi avoir un pelage brun, noir ou, plus rarement, blanc ou cannelle. L’écureuil gris est très abondant notamment dans la grande région de Montréal alors qu’il est majoritairement brun, plus ou moins foncé, à Toronto.

Au début du xxe siècle, il a été introduit en Afrique du Sud et en Angleterre, et est devenu invasif depuis dans cette île, aboutissant à une réduction drastique des populations de l’écureuil roux en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles. Des individus introduits dans d’autres régions d’Europe, en Italie notamment, posent depuis les années 1990 de sérieux problèmes environnementaux.

Pour l’identifier, et notamment pour le distinguer de l’écureuil « roux » à pelage gris-roux ou noir, on se référera utilement au site du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle1 où est menée une enquête sur la population des diverses espèces d’écureuil en France.
