Aarihini forgot some of the words to the song she was singing and went quiet for a few minutes. Had she really forgotten? These memories of her mother were all that she had left now and she could not allow them to disappear!

But then she recalled the details of when her mother would sing the song in their kitchen: She saw her mother there – chopping vegetables in the late afternoon with chai brewing on the stovetop – and then she remembered the rest of the song. She began singing again.

Not long after that, Aarihini noticed a woman come down the village hillside toward her. The women stopped in the middle of the road and then just stood there staring at her, wearing an expression of surprise and guardedness.

On any other day, Aarinhini may have assumed that this village woman was judging her negatively or considered her some strange novelty. She would have ignored the women and gotten into her car to continue her journey.

Aairihini couldn’t help but leave her car in the middle of the road – simply because she knew she could in this lovely rural area – and enjoy the open space. It reminded her of college days, when she and her friends would hang around on the greens, chatting excitedly about their dreams of success.
All of those friends were far away now – in different cities, different countries. The few friends that were in the same city were, like Aarihini, engrossed in their onerous, yet high profile work.
On one hand, Aarihini felt exhilarated by the feeling of the sun on her skin, the open space, the sight of the trees being gently stirred by the breeze. -But on the other hand, she was a little overwhelmed by the silence and the empty roads and villages….Taking a break from the city might be recharging her energy levels, but it certainly wasn’t doing anything to reduce the feelings of loneliness that she had been dealing with lately.

Again, Alpa was standing in front of the tiny mirror that hung in the hall, going through her morning routine a little later than everyone else. As she applied her sindoor, her eyes again wandered to the crack in the wall made by the nail that held the mirror up. Like every day since the mirror was hung, she followed the crack in the wall with her eyes, noticing the tiniest increases in its length and breadth over the last 24 hours.
Again, Alpa wondered how long it would be before the forces of nature worked through that crack to bring the entire wall crumbling down – would it happen all at once, maybe even from a tremor in the earth? – or would it just keep slowly breaking down over the years, particle by particle? Like so many times before, Alpa considered these same thoughts about what felt like the gradual and persistent breaking down of her spirit.
Again, she noticed how beautiful the late morning light was as it entered the room. Again she scolded herself for no longer being able to take any pleasure in such beauties of everyday life.
