Red Fox

The Red Fox is the most plentiful and widely distributed species of Vulpes in the World. He is referred to as a “true fox”, distinguished from wolves, dogs, jackals, and coyotes, (which are members of the genus Canis), by his diminutive size.

Foxes feed primarily on small rodents, but like most canines, they are virtually omnivorous and will eat just about anything. A day’s diet could include fruit, eggs, small birds, and all manner of rodents.

Like most foxes, the Red Fox has amazingly acute hearing, which helps him to track and locate his prey. He can hear the squeal of a mouse from 300 feet away, and he can hear a grouse shuffling on a branch at over 600 yards. Oddly, the Red Fox’s sense of smell isn’t as good as most domestic dogs.
