When I first saw the small village of Vik, I was constraint to stare at this church. On this cloudy, cold day I had a walk on the black sanded beach and had this view. Could not withstand to take a photograph.

Dyrhólaey is a small and rocky peninsula, not far from the village Vik in the south of Iceland. It name derives/means “the door hole island”. It got its name from the massive stone arch that the sea has eroded from the headland.

In the summertime, this area is home to quite a large number of puffins. Unfortunately, we were there a bit too early in the season and we missed them.

Somehow the cliff and rocky peninsula look like a elephant to me, hence the title. 🙂
