During the Architecture International Year, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and the Association of Architects sponsored a tendering procedure with the aim of selecting a project for the construction of the Côa Valley Art and Archaeology Museum. First prize was given to the team coordinated by the architects Pedro Tiago Pimentel and Camilo Rebelo, from Porto.
The building and exhibition projects were developed from the original winning proposal. “The evolution of the museum body – whilst metamorphic prosthetic – aims to embed the building into the landscape. Therefore, it is a strong and affirmative gesture but also a subtle intervention, adapted to the topography and in dialogue with the surrounding landscape.” The building is four stories high (roof/Floor 2, Floor 1, Floor 0 and Floor -1) organized in a particular system of vertical and horizontal connections. The roof possesses a parking space and offers a scenic view of the landscape. Two elevators and a staircase directly connect the roof to the museum’s lobby. Floor 0, where the permanent and temporary exhibitions are located, is structured by a ramp/corridor that crosses the entire body of the building. “At the end of the ramp’s first section, stands a connection hub that distributes visitors towards different parts of the Museum.”

No Ano Internacional da Arquitectura, o Ministério da Cultura e a Ordem dos Arquitectos, promoveram a abertura de um concurso para o projecto deste edifício. O então Instituto Português de Arqueologia, com a colaboração da Ordem dos Arquitectos, lançou o Concurso Público para os trabalhos de concepção e elaboração do projecto do que se designou então “Museu de Arte e Arqueologia do Vale do Côa.” O primeiro prémio foi atribuído à equipa dos Arquitectos Pedro Tiago Pimentel e Camilo Rebelo, do Porto. O museu construído é resultado do desenvolvimento da proposta vencedora: projecto do edifício e o projecto expositivo. “A evolução do corpo do museu – enquanto prótese metamórfica – tem por base um pressuposto único de integração na paisagem. Neste sentido é simultaneamente um gesto forte e afirmativo, mas também subtil, sensível à topografia e dialogante com a paisagem que o recebe.”
O edifício é constituído por quatro pisos, cobertura/Piso 2, Piso 1, Piso 0 e Piso-1, organizados por um sistema particular de circulações verticais e horizontais
A cobertura reúne circulações pedonais de acesso ao museu e faixas destinadas a estacionamento de veículos. Incorpora ainda áreas panorâmicas. Dois elevadores e uma escada criam a ligação directa ao átrio de entrada do museu.
O Piso 0, onde se situa a exposição permanente do museu e as salas de exposições temporárias, é estruturado pela rampa/corredor que percorre todo o corpo. “No fim do primeiro tramo desta rampa forma-se um nó de ligações”: para o interior do Museu, para a área administrativa, sede do Parque e Museu do Côa, para o piso inferior, onde se localiza o restaurante/cafetaria e o auditório.
