Ubi sunt? es un tópico literario mediante el cual el poeta se pregunta por el paradero de los que han muerto. Viene de la frase en latín “Ubi sunt qui ante nos in hoc mundo fuere?” (¿Dónde están o qué fue de quienes vivieron antes que nosotros?”). Éste es ya utilizado en la literatura clásica romana y transmitido tanto a las literaturas romances como a la literatura occidental. Como muchos tópicos se ha transmitido en su formulación latina.
Ubi sunt? significa literalmente “¿Dónde están?” y hace referencia a la fugacidad de las glorias mundanas, de los elementos del mundo terrenal y sensorial. Se usa para preguntar por personalidades y bienes ya desaparecidos.

Ubi sunt? Is a literary motif dealing with the transience of life, through which the poet wonders about the whereabouts of people who died. Taken from the Latin Ubi sunt qui ante nos in hoc mundo fuere?, meaning “Where are those who were before us?”. The theme was a common motif in classical Roman literature that was passed on to both Romance and Western literature.
