One of Chile’s largest and most important Magellanic penguin breeding sites is situated on Magdalena Island in the Straits of Magellan. The island has been designated a national nature reserve because of its importance as a penguin breeding site, and the reserve is managed by the government agency Corporación Nacional Forestal.

New on 500px : Morning Stroll on the Beach by joshanon by joshanon

Ah what we will do for a photograph! On this glorious morning at St. Andrew’s Bay in South Georgia Island, I saw thousands of king penguins march along the shore. But the real magic was when I noticed a reflection on the sand when the tide went out. We were very lucky and had a very calm morning, so I went and lay down right on the edge of the surf, trying to capture the sky, mountains, penguins, and reflection. As the tide would come in, I’d lie on my side and lift my body up so it was resting on one ankle and one elbow, keeping my cuffs out of the water. It was working…right until this group of penguins came close. Of course right then a larger wave came through, completely soaking me, but I kept shooting. I think this shot ended up being worth the cold bath!
