Rano Raraku Die meisten der fast 900 Moai´s wurden aus weichem Tuffgestein gefertigt und stammen aus dem Steinbruch des Rano Raraku. Es wurden auf der Insel allerdings auch 53 (kleinere) Moais – vornehmlich aus der ersten Epoche – gefunden, die aus hartem Basaltgestein, rotem Tuff oder Trachyt hergestellt sind.

The feeling you get when you visit this huge archaeological site is quite shocking. In Rano Raraku there are 397 moai in various stages of development and it seems as if the sculptors left the job abruptly and could come back at any moment.
