Sweden – Stockholm Stadhuset (City Hall) by Ragnar Östberg

Stadshuset is considered one of Sweden’s foremost examples of national romanticism in architecture. The unique site, overlooking Riddarfjärden, inspired a central motif of the construction, namely the juxtaposition of city architecture and water that also represents a central feature of Stockholm’s cityscape as a whole. The architectural style is one of refined eclecticism, blending massive, austere, North European brick construction and playful elements reminiscent of oriental and venetian architecture, such as turrets adorned with golden starlets, decorated balconies, wooden masts, and statues. It is also the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet held on 10th of December each year

A total of eight million dark red bricks, many handmade, were used for its construction, which started in 1911

France – Val de La Loire – Abbaye de Fontevraud – Les Cuisines

The Kitchen was built between 1160 and 1170, on the southwest corner of the cloister, in the continuation of the refectory. The kitchen contains eight chapels, five of which are still preserved. It is based on a square rising from each side in slightly broken arc, completed by an octagon whose every angle consists of an engaged column. Each side of the octagon houses a small apse, each of three open bays and hosts a hood. Through a system of tubes, the square arch supports a central fireplace. The exact destination of the kitchen is debatable. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc offers in his Dictionary of French architecture, a theory about the evacuation of smoke through the various fireplaces, assuming that each apse was used as foyer. The art historian Michel Melot hypothesis proposes the use of the building as fumoir

Sweden – Stockholm – Gamla Stan – Livrustkammaren (The Royal Armoury)

The Royal Armoury is a museum located in the basement of the Royal Palace’s southern wing in Stockholm. Together with the Hallwyl Museum and Skokloster Castle the museum constitutes a national authority, headed by a Director General, and accountable to the Ministry of Culture. The three museums base their work on a national cultural policy resolution enacted by Swedish Parliament. The main purpose of the museum is the portrayal of Sweden’s royal history from Gustav Vasa up until present day. For almost five hundred years, items once in the possession of Swedish monarchs and their families have been kept here. From generation to generation, they have built up an ever-expanding collection of memories from the country=92s different dynasties, evoking well-known events in Swedish history. Most of the artefacts in the Royal Armoury’s rich and varied collection reflect official occasions such as state ceremonies, weddings, coronations and funerals, with magnificent ceremonial costumes, carriages, saddles, armour and weapons. Seen from an international perspective, the Royal Armoury is unique, with regards not only to the age and high quality of its contents
