“Manny” the Mandarin duck as he has come to be known to all the birding locals in North Texas. He has caused quite the stir since Mandarin ducks are mostly found mostly in Asia, but are also found in some European countries. They are not so common to North America, although there are some in CA, and in NC. This is the first one for TX. Many believe he escaped from captivity somewhere or that he belonged to someone that no longer wanted him and was taken to Centenial Park to be with other ducks. The funny thing is that a flock of Canada Geese has adopted him, and a female goose with broken wings has become his surrogate mother. Manny protects her, and she protects him. It’s endearing watching them interact with a species not his own and how they take care of him. The question will be what the human species will do to him. Some don’t want him there. Such a shame!
