Leiden – My Weblog

Taken at 10pm. That’s the sign the days in Holland are almost at the longest. This is the Zijlpoortsbrug and gate taken from the ‘Schrijversbrug’. The Gate dates from 1667, a short 100 years after the Spanish under Francisco de Valdez attempted to capture the city. The city was surrounded by thick brick walls and this was one of 8 entrances.

The port of Leiden, the historical harbour. The water is called the ‘gallow waters’ or ‘het galgewater’ because of the fields of gallows in the long long history ago.

As seen from the bridge ‘Bostelbrug’ you see the ‘Galgenwater’. This was the area in the city where all the gallows were. The bridge you see in the far distance is the ‘Rembrandtsbrug’, named after the greatest painter who is born on the left of that bridge.
