My picture number 100 needs to be somewhat special – at least for myself. The picture was taken at a small jazz café or bar in the city centre of Nagano-shi, called Groovy. Groovy was a place I first visited in 1997, after that I came back over and over again. Jam sessions every night, most talented amateurs brought their instruments – but also professional musicians – and played jazz music all night long.
Here I celebrated New Year many times, here I introduced my wife for my Nagano friends for the first time, here the band played me a special song on my 50th birthday – and all the time Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker was watching us from big pictures on the wall.
Groovy was a very special place where I was always welcomed – by the bar owner and by the musicians. Last year I was told that the owner Uchiyama-san had passed away, and the bar was closed. It was very sad news. This picture is my celebration to that great bar and to Uchiyama-san. A big thank you for everything!
