This Mayan girl and her mother were weaving in the central open air market in Oaxaca, Mexico. Having just woken with the sun and very hungry, I was hurrying along, when I stumbled upon this colorful textile stall. The young girl’s eyes have always haunted my memory, as she clutched the fresh piece of bread that had just been handed her. I raised my camera and the girl reached out with her tiny hands and offered to share her breakfast. Her mother explained something to me in a native dialect, which was not Spanish and I couldn’t understand. Later that day I returned to the same stall and purchased some of the hand weaving that you see hanging in the background.
