Without tying her hair, Alpa jumped up and went outside, ready to find whoever it was that sounded so much like her Amma. However, within moments of running outside, she realized that no one was around. There was only her – Alpa – and the large fields and quiet homes of her village.
Alpa somehow felt abandoned by this voice that withdrew as quickly as it had come. The full force of her loneliness began to crush her once again. She felt foolish for her impulsive reaction to go chasing after this voice that had only been in her imagination.
Her disappointment in herself intensified. Here she was, in the most familiar place in the world, the fields where she had worked and played all of her life, and yet she felt utterly lost.

Aairihini came back to the present moment and realized she had been driving aimlessly while her mind was wandering. She had no idea where she was!
She stopped the car and somehow felt she was missing her mother more than ever. Aarihini felt a deep sense of regret for the stubbornness and defiance she showed her mother for so many years.
She felt like there was so much of life that she wasn’t living and knew that if only her mother were alive, she would be able to advise her on what to do – and she would listen. Aarihini started to imagine what advice her mother would give if she were there now….
She got out of the car and scanned the village landscape as the imaginary conversation with her mother played out in her head. She wandered along the deserted main road, imagining, thinking, remembering.
She started singing a song her mother used to sing to her when she was a young child – it had been so many years! Aarihini was surprised that she even remembered that song.

As Alpa waved her aarati lamp before the deities in the family altar, she wished for the light of the aarti flame to to pierce the inner darkness she felt. She asked the gods to help her find a way to draw herself back up from the dark well and into the light, where she could feel like she was a part of life and not so separate.
Everyone had only the nicest things to say about Alpa’s devotion and hard work, but these points rarely came up. In fact, it seemed that the only time people spoke about her this way was when her family began discussing her marriage. They spoke so frequently about her diligence, her intelligence, her pleasant nature and her beauty during this time that she really began to feel like she was someone special, someone valuable.
Soon after Alpa’s marriage, however, her family involved her less and less in their plans and conversations unless it was to discuss when she would have her first child. Her husband’s family also took her for granted, but she had expected that. While her husband himself was sweet, he was also quiet. Alpa didn’t feel she could speak to him about her feelings.
