New on 500px : Mdina by michailchristodoulopoulos by michailchristodoulopoulos

Mdina , also known by its titles Città Vecchia or Città Notabile, is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta, which served as the island’s capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is still confined within its walls, and has a population of just under 300, but it is contiguous with the town of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000.

The city was founded as Maleth in around the 8th century BC by Phoenician settlers, and was later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina, and it was reduced to its present size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta. During the latter period, the city adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word medina. The city remained the capital of Malta throughout the Middle Ages, until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced a period of decline over the following centuries, although it saw a revival in the early 18th century. At this point, it acquired several Baroque features, although it did not lose its medieval character.

Mdina remained the centre of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities, but it never regained its pre-1530 importance, giving rise to the popular nickname the “Silent City” by both locals and visitors. Mdina is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is now one of the main tourist attractions in Malta.

New on 500px : Midnight sunset over Gamlebybro and Bakklandet Trondheim by Aziz_Nasuti by Aziz_Nasuti

Picture has been taken around 12 p.m. The Gamlebybro (Old Town Bridge) has become a symbol of Trondheim and connects the two banks of the river Nidelven – the city centre and Bakklandet.

You have not truly been to Trondheim without having crossed the Old Town Bridge. The Old Town Bridge crosses the river Nidelven from the southern end of Kjøpmannsgata and connects the city centre with Bakklandet. Bakklandet is an exciting neighbourhood with inviting cafes and unique boutiques. The bike lift «Trampe» also has its starting point at Bakklandet. Text from Visit Norway. New on 500px : London in the Fog by PhotosByMaxime by PhotosByMaxime

On a few rare mornings in London, it gets incredibly foggy- this was one of them (1st Nov 2015). It was so thick you could barely see 20m in front of you. I happened to be on the south bank of the thames near tower bridge when it started to blow away. The result was a photo that looks like it was taken in the 1800 at the time of the London docklands! A simple colour grading was added in photoshop later to make it look not so grey.

New on 500px : Murcia Cathedral of Santa Maria by michailchristodoulopoulos by michailchristodoulopoulos

Murcia is a university city in southeastern Spain and the capital of the region of Murcia. Plaza Cardinal Belluga is the city architectural showpiece, where the ornate cathedral, with its mash-up of styles from Gothic to baroque, and the colorful 18th-century Palacio Episcopal stand in striking contrast to the modern 1990s ayuntamiento (city hall) annex by architect Rafael Moneo.

New on 500px : Midnight sunset over Gamlebybro, Bakklandet and Nidelva Trondheim by Aziz_Nasuti by Aziz_Nasuti

This is a midnight sunset around 11:45 p.m. The picture has been taken over gamlebybro (the bridge with the red color). This is an iconic element of the Trondheim. Trondheim with picturesque, tiny, wooden houses. This idyllic neighbourhood on the east side of the Nidelva river features old timber buildings, originally the homes of the working class. Now restored, Bakklandet is a charming mixture of houses, shops and cafés.
Nidelva river cuts through the city, winding its way along the Nidarosdomen park and picturesque areas, with the historic, wooden wharf houses lining its sides towards the mouth at the Trondheim fjord, and the beautiful, wooden bridge amle Bybrocrossing the river. Picture has been taken at 11:30 p.m. with absolutely amazing colors of the sunset. In this picture nothing has been added or removed. All the reflection and colors were very close to the reality. I just has boosted the shadows. I have used ND filter and gratuate filter for a long-exposure shot. Trondheim with picturesque, tiny, wooden houses. New on 500px : Venice by night !! by michailchristodoulopoulos by michailchristodoulopoulos

Venice is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Parts of Venice are renowned for the beauty of their settings, their architecture, and artwork. A part of the city is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.

The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain, and spice) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period

The name of the city, deriving from Latin forms Venetia and Venetiae, is most likely taken from “Venetia et Histria”, the Roman name of Regio X of Roman Italy, but applied to the coastal part of the region that remained under Roman Empire outside of Gothic, Lombard, and Frankish control. The name Venetia, however, derives from the Roman name for the people known as the Veneti, and called by the Greeks Eneti (
