Aarihini forgot some of the words to the song she was singing and went quiet for a few minutes. Had she really forgotten? These memories of her mother were all that she had left now and she could not allow them to disappear!

But then she recalled the details of when her mother would sing the song in their kitchen: She saw her mother there – chopping vegetables in the late afternoon with chai brewing on the stovetop – and then she remembered the rest of the song. She began singing again.

Not long after that, Aarihini noticed a woman come down the village hillside toward her. The women stopped in the middle of the road and then just stood there staring at her, wearing an expression of surprise and guardedness.

On any other day, Aarinhini may have assumed that this village woman was judging her negatively or considered her some strange novelty. She would have ignored the women and gotten into her car to continue her journey.

She thought of her past friends and playmates who used to join her here. Most of them had moved to other villages after marriage, and the few who were here seemed so happy with their lives. Alpa would meet them and every time, just as she was about to ask for advice, she would realize that they would not understand. They were connected, they were not down in the well – how could they have any idea of what Alpa was going through?
Alpa receded further into herself where all was helplessness and delusion. What hope could there possibly be?
She curled into herself, into a place so dark and so removed that she felt she may never be able to come back.

Aairihini came back to the present moment and realized she had been driving aimlessly while her mind was wandering. She had no idea where she was!
She stopped the car and somehow felt she was missing her mother more than ever. Aarihini felt a deep sense of regret for the stubbornness and defiance she showed her mother for so many years.
She felt like there was so much of life that she wasn’t living and knew that if only her mother were alive, she would be able to advise her on what to do – and she would listen. Aarihini started to imagine what advice her mother would give if she were there now….
She got out of the car and scanned the village landscape as the imaginary conversation with her mother played out in her head. She wandered along the deserted main road, imagining, thinking, remembering.
She started singing a song her mother used to sing to her when she was a young child – it had been so many years! Aarihini was surprised that she even remembered that song.

Aarihini stopped the car to take in the stillness that surrounded her in the countryside. She was glad she decided to get away and explore! She knew she was only a few hours from the city, but she felt like she was in a different world altogether.
She took a few deep breaths as she admired the green, the quiet and most of all, the feeling of being completely liberated from the chaos of the city. She had even switched her mobile off to make sure she didn’t pay attention to the endless stream of emails that were coming to her inbox.
“They can wait until Monday,” she weakly told herself as she felt a wave of guilt pass through her for ignoring her work.

Red – Tailed Hawk – Buse à queue rousse

The red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the “chickenhawk,” though it rarely preys on standard sized chickens.[2] It breeds throughout most of North America, from western Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies, and is one of the most common buteos in North America. Red-tailed hawks can acclimate to all the biomes within their range. There are fourteen recognized subspecies, which vary in appearance and range. It is one of the largest members of the genus Buteo in North America, typically weighing from 690 to 1,600 g (1.52 to 3.53 lb) and measuring 45–65 cm (18–26 in) in length, with a wingspan from 110–145 cm (43–57 in). The red-tailed hawk displays sexual dimorphism in size, with females averaging about 25% heavier than males.[3] The bird is sometimes referred to as the red-tail for short, when the meaning is clear in context.
