New on 500px : View through Town Gate by mirosu by mirosu

The photo shows a view through Zug Main Town Gate to the Town Hall Square with the tables of famous Town Hall Restaurant.
The Main Town Gate is part of Zug Clock Tower and it is the main gateway to the old town and to the Lake Zug. The tower was built in the 13th century. It was part of the protective city walls. The clock was added in 1574.
The Town Hall is located in the older part of the town. Initially its ground floor was used as a market hall with the city council meeting on the upper floors. Indeed the Corporation of the city of Zug still uses these rooms today, as it did 500 years ago.
Zug is the capital town of Canton Zug which is one of the smallest of the Swiss cantons in terms of area.
The canton Zug is a low tax region, and is headquarters for a number of multinational enterprises.
The shore of Lake Zug has been embanked and forms a promenade, from which glorious views of the snowy peaks of the Bernese Oberland, as well as of the Rigi and Pilatus, are gained. Towards its northerly end, a monument marks the spot where a part of the shore slipped into the lake in 1887.
The name ‘Zug’ originates from fishing vocabulary; in the Middle Ages it referred to the right to ‘pull up’ fishing nets and hence to the right to fish.
The town of Zug is located on the shore of Lake Zug around 135km east from Bern and 35km south from Zurich.
