New on 500px : Miracle of Flight by chrishpetersen by chrishpetersen

A sandhill crane soars overhead with elegance and grace … creating a sense of wonder at nature’s miracle of flight.

Mother Nature has been working on the miracle of flight with cranes for a long time!! A 10 million year old crane fossil has been found in Nebraska. To put that in perspective, homo sapiens have only been around about 200,000 years.

From the perspective in this photo you can appreciate the amazing construction of wings that can span more than 7 feet (2m). There are intricate overlapping layers of wing feathers that enable this bird to soar up to 13,000 feet in altitude.

I would encourage you to watch the cranes flying at dawn and dusk (Central Time Zone), during the migration on the Rowe Sanctuary live web cam. When you click you will first have to watch an ad before you can view the web cam for free: http://bit.ly/24XaVvG

New on 500px : Reflection Touchdown by backcountrygallery by backcountrygallery

This was captured Green Cay nature Preserve in Southern FL.

The preserve has a fantastic boardwalk that loops directly through the wetlands. I arrived just a touch before sunrise and started walking the loop. I was only about 1/3rd of a mile into it when I came across an area that was absolutely loaded with herons and egrets of all types. I ended up spending most of my time right in that spot, shooting away as opportunities presented themselves.

The biggest problem was the boardwalk itself – it was too high for shots like the one here (at least if you were standing). So I ended up shooting through the railing as I sat on the boardwalk. I got me much closer to the water, so as birds would land, I would have a better eye-level view of the scene.

At one point, this snowy egret came swooping in and I was lucky enough o catch him just as he was making contact with the water. When I double checked the images on the back of the camera, I knew I had one that I couldn’t wait to share. 🙂
