New on 500px : Pumice Beachfront/May 2013 by photographybywalt by photographybywalt

My first trip the Hawaiian Islands I was impressed by the tropical landscape and remoteness of these wonderful atolls. I’ve returned many times since that first trip and have learned that the very Island of Hawaii is being formed by volcanoes that are currently active. Here is an example of the pumice rock that clutters the beaches of Keawakapu. At sunset Carol traveled along the shoreline in search of an area that was safe for swimming or surfing. In the distance is another Hawaiian atoll that the U.S. air force used for bombing practice. Indeed a beautiful beach but no place to surf or swim

New on 500px : Kipuka Lava Flow by tomkualii by tomkualii

Kipuka or a lava flow flowing into a vegetation area. Image taken in 2010. Although there are flows as of right now flowing into the forest area near the Pu’u O’o lava crater.
