The Willow Ptarmigan is the state bird of Alaska. During fall, it undergoes a color change from brown to full winter white. This bird is about half changed over to its winter color. I love how camouflaged it is in this photo. Note how it’s colors perfectly mimic the background/foreground.

This dynamic duo of sub-adult polar bears could always be counted on for entertain and photo ops as they played in the frigid waters off the coast of Barter Island near Kaktovik, Alaska. If they weren’t dunking each other, posturing for a “fight”, or submerging themselves for a surprise attack, they were floating around in circles and usually finding the camera lens for a brief moment. 🙂
