This is one of the ten angels on the Ponte Sant’Angelo in Rome. The Angel with the whips was sculpted by Lazzaro Morelli, based on a sketch by Bernini. Bernini was commissioned by pope Clement IX in 1668 to design the statues for the bridge. The angels all hold a symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus, such as a crown of thorns, a whip, etc.
