In those days, after Thanksgiving this space was an ice skating rink (free). It had a restaurant downstairs where, if you were lucky, or tipped well, you could get a table right next to the glass where you could watch the skaters. Some were kids and families, but some danced beautifully together. In the summertime there were all kinds of international activities and shows to expose New Yorkers and tourists to customs they’d never seen. This is also where the biggest Christmas tree in the nation stood for the holidays drawing people from all over the world.

In those days large corporations felt they had an obligation to give something back to the people.

It was my birthday. I was 21.
